Ketika petugas jaga membutuhkan arah yang harus dikemudikan oleh kompas, arah putaran kemudi yang diinginkannya harus dinyatakan diikuti dengan setiap angka yang diucapkan secara terpisah, termasuk nol.
Pada saat menerima perintah untuk mengarahkan, misalnya, 182°, juru mudi harus mengulanginya dan membawa kapal berputar dengan mantap ke arah yang diperintahkan. Ketika kapal sudah stabil di jalur yang diperintahkan, juru mudi harus memanggil:
“Tetap pada satu delapan dua”
Officer jaga yang memberi perintah harus mengulangi dan mengetahui panggilan juru mudi.
Jika diinginkan untuk mengarahkan pada tanda yang dipilih, juru mudi harus diperintahkan untuk:
“Mengarahkan…buoy…(tandai)…(suar)”
Juru mudi harus mengulangi perintah dan ketika mantap pada sasaran, panggil:
“Tetap di…buoy…(tandai)…(suar)”
Officer jaga yang memberi perintah harus mengulangi / mengetahui panggilan juru mudi.
